How Are The Pearls Made?

Pearls are different from other gem-stones instead of being mined from rocks pearls are harvested from the ocean, found in living sea creatures. Pearls are gathered from mollusks, mussels and clams, pearls are more commonly found in oysters. In order to protect itself an oyster will secrete a substance which builds up around sand and then hardens. This in turn starts the process of pearl being formed. The longer the pearl stays inside the shell the bigger it will get.

It is easy to see why pearl jewelry is so expensive considering the long and drawn out process of pearl creation. Now days however pearls are farmed allowing for higher production and lowing the costs. Without farming the price of pearl jewelry would be unobtainable for many people.

Pearls can also be man made. This type of pearl are made some in controlled environments, using sand or shell fragment. Hermage which is a fish based product is used in place of the missing oyster mucus. Man made pearls are also made by painting the hermage onto a glass ball, which is left to harden.
